How do I use the Reading Lists tool in Canvas?

Answer

Reading Lists (a tool from EBSCO) allows instructors to create and manage course reading lists comprised of library resources and external web links. Download the Reading Lists Quick Start Guide linked below for complete instructions, or watch this video for an introduction to the tool:

Adding web links to PDFs stored in Files:

If Files are displayed in student navigation:

  1. Make sure your file is published (displays with a green check)
  2. Select the file to open it in preview
  3. Copy the preview URL (should include files?preview= near the end of the URL)
  4. Add this URL under Add Web Resource on your Reading List

If Files are not displayed in student navigation:

  1. Make sure your file is published (displays with a green check)
  2. In Modules, create a new module that will remain unpublished
  3. In this module, Add File and select the PDF
  4. Make sure the file itself is published in the Module view (the file will have a green check but the module will not)
  5. Still in Modules, open the published file
  6. Copy the preview URL (should include ?module_item_id= near the end)
  7. Add this URL under Add Web Resources on your Reading List
