Q. What is the difference between materials on reserve and materials in reference?

While searching IUCAT, the library's online catalog, you may come across materials that have locations listed as "Reserves" or "Reference":

  • Reserves are materials placed by faculty in a closed stacks area for use by a specific class. Materials may be checked out by students in that class for a limited time period. Use may or may not be restricted to in-library only.
  • Reference refers to materials (e.g. encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri, handbooks, etc.) that are available for use only within the library. These materials may not be checked out.

Please Ask Us if you have additional questions about the differences between these types of library materials.
